Nickelodeon celebrated its 10th annual Worldwide Day of Play (WWDoP), a health and wellness initiative, which drew more than 35,000 kids and families to the Nethermead in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park this past Saturday, Sept. 21.
Leading up to WWDoP, Nickelodeon also partnered with NYC & Company to host health and wellness-themed public events across the city beginning Monday, Sept. 16. Locations included the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and Union Square.
A Day of Play
This year’s WWDoP signature event featured an entire day of activities and games for kids and their families, including football and tennis drills, Zumba, and double-dutch sponsored by more than 30 national partners, including NFL Play 60, After School Alliance, Girl Scouts of the USA, New York City Department of Education, New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and New York Road Runners.
Concert in Prospect Park
A special concert performance hosted by Ciara Bravo and starring Big Time Rush and breakout star Ariana Grande rounded out this fun-filled day. Joining the musical stars at this year’s celebration were NBA superstar Brook Lopez, Olympian Sasha Cohen, as well as some of Nickelodeon’s most popular stars and animated characters. Ryan Newman, the casts from The Haunted Hathaways and Instant Mom, Dora the Explorer, Diego, and Geo from Team Umizoomi were just a few of the celebrities who made appearances during the event.
Worldwide Day of Play is part of Nickelodeon’s health and wellness efforts and continues the network’s legacy of promoting positive messages to its viewers. Through Nickelodeon’s health and wellness efforts over the past 10 years, millions of kids have pledged to get healthy. As it has since 2004, Nickelodeon suspended programming across all of its TV channels (Nickelodeon, Nick Jr., Nicktoons and TeenNick) and websites from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. (ET/PT) in order to urge kids to “get up, go outside and play.” Millions of kids and families across the U.S. and worldwide participated in thousands of events both in the United States and worldwide.
“We are incredibly excited to commemorate our milestone, 10th anniversary Worldwide Day of Play celebration in New York City, one of the greatest cities in the world and home to our corporate offices,” said Marva Smalls, Executive Vice President of Public Affairs and Administration, Nickelodeon Group. “Over the past 10 years, Nickelodeon has been at the forefront of addressing health and wellness issues with our audience. With our Worldwide Day of Play signature event, kids around the globe will connect to activities and organizations that will aid them in adopting healthy and active lifestyles.”
