Ok, it’s finally starting to warm up, so away go the heavy sweaters and winter coats! Yay! Of course, as a mom, it can be hard to find the time to freshen up your own style for a new season. Luckily, you don’t need a whole new wardrobe or a weekend shopping expedition to make it happen.
I’m not referring to your hair here — although layers look good there, too. If working outside for years taught me anything, it’s the power of layers! An added bonus — boho looks are big this year, and boho is big on layers.
As far as what to layer and where, remember that it’s spring. It might be tempting to pull a hoodie on before you leave, but it makes a big difference to choose a cardigan instead. If a classic cardigan feels like too much for you, kimono-type layers are big this year. The best part is these come in all kinds of lengths, from crop top to floor, so you can dress for any occasion.
Moms in spring have a lot to do, and it’s not gonna happen in heels! Simple outfits that are well-put-together are the way to go. Sneakers are comfortable but not exactly stylish. Ballet flats, on the other hand, are both. The key is to strike a balance between easy and stylish, and that means saving fancy dresses for date nights and important events, like a night in with some wine and the girls. That’s fun, too.
A well-fitting pair of jeans is acceptable almost everywhere. Because, let’s face it, yoga pants just aren’t OK for wearing all the time. I know, it’s not fair. Jeans combined with layered tops are going to make you look put-together with minimal effort on your part.
Unless you’re going out on the town, keeping makeup minimal is just plain smart. This means different things for different people — you can use a surprising amount of makeup and still look natural-ish. For most people, however, less is more.
For many people that means about four basics — concealer/foundation, blush, mascara, and a lippy. Since it’s spring, you can do a double duty and mix a bit of foundation in with your moisturizer. It’s pretty much a DIY BB Cream, which is also a great money saver.
Once you’ve got your daytime look down, you’ll find it’s surprisingly easy to add a few flourishes and make it more dramatic. A touch-up on the blush, a bit of eye shadow and a darker lip color are pretty much all it takes to go from day to night looks.
Tame Those Locks
Hair can make or break your look, which is a challenge for some of us. One of the most important aspects is proper care — making sure to condition and getting it trimmed regularly. Those two very important steps, combined with an easy-to-style cut, can help you keep your hair routine to a minimum.
However, we all have bad hair days. It happens to the best of us — or in my case, it’s just perpetual. Instead of going out with wild hair or resigning yourself to staying indoors all day, just cover it up. Scarves are a girl’s best friend for many reasons, and hiding a bad hair day is one of them! There are tons of ways to tie a headscarf and make that bed head look like an intentional part of your outfit.
Embrace the Accessories
Everyone has a different style. One of the easiest ways to take the same look from fall to spring is with new accessories. Bracelets, rings, sunglasses, belts and purses are all options for bringing a mismatched outfit together. Floral prints are inherently spring, so a floral bracelet or ring can give you a fresh edge without taking more than 30 seconds to put on. Just keep your kids’ ages in mind when you’re choosing them — a 1-year-old is going to want to chew on that necklace!
Don’t Forget Mom
Of course, Mother’s Day is coming up, but that should really be about once a week, don’t you think?
Sure, it might not exactly be “me time,” but getting a quick trim in between errands or going for brunch with some girlfriends is a necessary part of life. After all, we aren’t just moms. We’ve still got identities beyond that, and we should make an effort to put those identities on display. There’s nothing prettier than a happy person, and your kids will behave better if they’ve missed you. Win-win situation there!
