Family Fun,Robots and Dinosaurs at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia!

We’ve been to several Science Centers and I liked them all, but I have to say, this one takes the cake! I loved it. As did all 3 of my kids, varying ages 10-16. It’s literally a whole day exploring, learning and hands-on fun. This place is huge so plan at least 5 hours if you want to see it all, possibly more. Not only do they have the 3 floors of exhibits, there’s a planetarium (saw one of the shows, pretty good!). There’s also an IMAX theatre and the Franklin theatre all playing shows throughout the day. This is not a far trip from New York either! Living on Long Island, we could have even made it a (long) day trip but I recommend staying somewhere local for the night.

Now through April 27th, the special JURASSIC WORLD exhibit is going on. We didn’t see this personally, since we chose the Robots exhibit.  It’s very popular and I hear it sells out just about every day, so choose your time and go if you have those dinosaur loving kids!

“Based on the blockbuster movie,  the Jurassic World Exhibition immerses audiences of all ages in scenes inspired by the popular film.  Now, the park that was only a promise comes to life…right before your eyes. Imagine that?!

Travel to Isla Nublar and explore Jurassic World. Meet  a towering Brachiosaurus; come face-to-face with a Velociraptor; and get a rare up-close look at the most vicious dinosaur of them all, Tyrannosaurus Rex.”

ROBOT REVOLUTION ends April 2nd. This is the special exhibit we chose and we loved it! We got to play blackjack with a robot dealer (yes, this will be happening in the real life future).  We played tic tac toe with another robot and pressed buttons for another little robot to show off his hand stands and push ups. Beyond that, there were so many robots, ranging from the iRobot looking ones (a bit scary to me) to more machine style ones, all on the cutting edge of technology. Just amazing!  Robots playing soccer, robots solving Rubik’s cubes plus self driving cars are just a few of the 40 exhibits you can see. If your child loves technology and robotics this IS the place to be!

Other exhibits we loved:

Virtual Reality- Kids 12 and older can wear glasses and experience some VR!

Sports Zone- Race each other, test your jumping height and more in this fun room.

Electricity- Learned so many interesting facts about Ben Franklin and they had some cool hands-on fun too.

Sir Isaac’s Loft- What a fun room based on physics.

There’s also the giant heart where everyone can walk through, the train factory, space command, the earth and many more fun exhibits spread out in a spacious museum. It was comfortable when we went (at 10am) but was quite crowded when we left (after 3) so plan accordingly: Get in early, stay most of the day and then take a walk around town. After the center and our walk around town, we drove to Penn’s Landing to ice skate and eat. What a fun day in Philly!

All in all, if you love Science Center’s, The Franklin Institute is a must-see. I had wanted to take the kids for years and I am so glad I did, especially with the special ROBOTS exhibit going on. Check out their site here for all the info, rates and exhibits.
